See ya this afternoon

{September 27, 2008}   Time

Time is flying by so fast.  Ahh. It seems that yesterday was Monday, but it can’t be since tomorrow is Sunday.

So some wanted to do a cooking party.  Cooking for the babies that is.  The deal is that on Saturday Oct 4 we would get together and each person would bring a different fruit or veggie to cook/mash and then we could have a lot of food frozen for the babies.

Who all is interested?

Are you interested but the date doesn’t work?  What day would work?

Please let me know asap and we will make the arrangements.

{September 23, 2008}   And so it is Scheduled

At the last ENT appointment for Madelyn and Lydia the doctor pulled out the tubes which he put in Madelyn’s ears when is was 13months old (Feb. 07).  He check Lydia’s which were infection free for the first time in 3 months and said we should hold off on tubes until the 5th infection.  Too which I replied, oh that will be in the next week.  He look at me kind-of dumbly and and asked why I thought that.  I said, well we stopped the meds on tuesday, it is now Friday and she is all buggery.  Every time this takes place she gets an infection within 2 or 3 days.  He told me that common “day-care” colds don’t translate into ear infections.  BULL.  Saturday night I was up with her every 15 mins (of course Brian was away on work and I had the girls by myself  and had to preach the following morning).  Sunday night she only got up 4 times (ikes) and then yesterday she was running a temp.  To the walk-in we went.  Guess what….ear infection #5.  Poor girl.  She was up screaming bloody murder all night.  So to the ENT I went this morning.  Tubes are scheduled for the 6th of Oct.  I don’t want tubes, but when she has had 5 infections in 7 months of life and has spent 70 days on meds, it is a must.  Please pray for her as it is hard to “go under” at her age and she can’t have the boob for several hours before the placement of the tubes.

{September 18, 2008}   Fighting the times

So I guess that there is a part of me that wants to be “old fashion” and be a stay at home mom who knits, tats and quilts.  Wake up and just do the house stuff.  Oh-wait, I did that (sort of) for the first 9 months of Madelyn’s life (now she is 2 and 8 months).  It was hard work.  Maybe it was hard because I was still doing all of my Army work at the same time, I was just not going into the office to do it.  But then I decided that I had to put Madelyn into some sort of child care so I could get work done and then have time to really focus on her.

So you fight the times:  Work and throw your kid into a “big” day care, work and do in home day care, keep the kid at home and work from home or stay at home and the kids are your work.

Ahhh, at last we do the “big” day care.  Why?  I wanted the educational curriculum, I wanted the state eyes that focus on these places….I didn’t want the snot and colds, but you will get that any where and if not now when the start school it will come.  But, really parents, can you please keep your kid home if they have a real sickness…croup, RSV….  ARG.  Every time I get my girls healthy it seems that we start over, maybe I will go back to being a stay at home mom!

AHHH, it is a battle isn’t it.

{September 12, 2008}   Baby no

As we have all thought about, discussed, wondered and are currently making daily decisions about is when and if baby number 2 or 3 should be made or if we want to be on birth control.

So many things to consider.  For us birth control as pills, shots, iud and the such just aren’t what we want (no not for religious reasons, more for my body issues) and we aren’t ready to say we are done creating our family so the following is some interesting info from Dr. Sears:

Breastfeeding can suppress ovulation and thus serve as a form of birth control. When you breastfeed, the same hormones that make milk, called prolactin, also suppress the release of hormones that cause eggs to mature and become fertile and the lining of the womb to nourish fertile eggs. This is why breastfeeding mothers usually notice a delay in the return of their menstrual periods. This delay, called lactational amenorrhea, or LAM, may be nature’s way of telling you that one baby is all your body can handle right now, and it’s too soon for a sibling. As a natural method of birth control, LAM’s effectiveness rate can be as high as 98 percent (similar to artificial methods), but only if you observe the following practices:

Breastfeed frequently. In order for the level of milk-making hormones to stay high enough to suppress fertility hormones, frequent, unrestricted breastfeeding is necessary. This usually means breastfeeding at least every two to three hours during the day, or as often as baby needs.

Night nurse. Since fertility hormones tend to be highest during the sleeping hours, it’s also important to keep the milk-making hormones that suppress ovulation high at night. Since co-sleeping babies usually breastfeed more frequently during the night, having your nursing baby nestle right next to you during the night is one of the most effective ways to delay fertility. Once your baby starts sleeping through the night, the fertility hormones take over and breastfeeding is no longer likely to lead to natural child spacing. If you plan to train your baby to sleep through the night, your fertility is likely to return soon.

Avoid supplemental bottles and pacifiers. To keep the milk-making hormones high enough to suppress ovulation, it’s important that all of baby’s sucking be at the breast.

Delay the introduction of solid foods. Wait until baby is at least 6 months to introduce solid foods, and then make them an addition to, not a substitute for, breastfeeding. If you notice your baby is decreasing the number of nursings once you start introducing solid foods, back off a bit on the solids.

As you can see, the key to nursing and LAM is frequency. Studies have shown that women who practice the above four steps of LAM will average 14 months before their periods and fertility return.

If you are wondering whether or not you are fertile, consider:

* Have your periods returned? If your menstrual periods have returned, you can assume that breastfeeding is no longer a reliable method of birth control. However, around five percent of women do ovulate and are fertile even before their first period, which accounts for the occasional breastfeeding mother becoming pregnant even without the onset of a menstrual period.

* Is baby nursing less? Once baby starts naturally spacing out his own feedings, sleeping longer stretches at night, and you are increasing the amount of solid foods, chances are LAM is no longer effective.

Natural child spacing using the above guidelines is practiced in many cultures throughout the world in which mothers routinely co-sleep, allow unrestricted breastfeeding, and enjoy extended breastfeeding for two years or more.

{September 12, 2008}   Growin’ Together

Are you hurt by “broken-ness”?

-Broken relationships      -Broken trust

-Broken homes        -Broken marriages

-Broken bodies      -Broken faith

This is something that eats at me.  I see so many families that are broken and as a result there are so many damaged moms, dads, children, grandparents and so on.  The hurt runs deep and often people run from God during these times.  This week I have been working with several that are broken and can I just say that God heals.  God comforts and God is never far away from you  even when you are broken.

As I have be working with these people and families I have become even closer to my girls and my husband.  Often we take for granted what we have, but don’t take your marriage and your family for granted.  It will slip away in a blink of an eye.

Today do something special for you husband.  Maybe a little card in his pj drawer, lunch brought to him at work or even just some time talking with your heads on the pillows.  Deep intimate relationship with your spouse grow strong loving, united families!

{September 5, 2008}   The Shaggy Dog

Do you remember that movie?  Well in it a man turns into a dog, a huge shaggy dog.  I feel like this dog!  I have hair that is much like a fro and gee-wiz will it ever stop falling out by the bucket load?  I remember after Madelyn was born I lost a lot of hair, but the second birth seems to be way worse.  I must say that this morning in the shower it was only three handfulls, but what can a girl do to stop this?

I know some who can pop those huge pre-natels will not have the issue, but I have never been able to take those.  Thus I am Shaggy the Dog!
