Mommycafe’s Weblog

Did it get your attendtion (the title post)? I know you all are so interested in our personal life (not really, that is a sarcastic comment).  But sometimes it is good to hear that others don’t do it right.  Over the last 4 years (starting with my first pregnancy) we have read hundreds of books and tried so hard to structure our lives in a way that would be conducive to raising two (well I have always wanted 8, but that is insane) wonderful children.  So where did we go wrong?

There have been so many wonderful times and even nights where Brian and I lay in bed in complete awe of our beautiful girls.  But there has also been too many volcanic erruptions, harh words, wrong punishments.  So I have been wroking hard on finding ways to correct and raise my girls without yelling or hitting or harsh statements.  It isn’t easy.  I know that when Maddy was only 1.5 years old I could understand correcting a child through spankings or yelling, but I admit she has experienced a spanking and I have raised my voice.   I don’t want to be that kind of parent.  I have searched the scriptures for help too.  Unfortunately there isn’t a lot of “how to” just a lot of raise up your children in obedience!  How do you do that?

Part of my master’s degree is pastoring families and raising Christian children.  I have to observe different methods, structures and the such.  So as I get ready to write papers and put together the “oh-so-fun” presentations how would you like to participate in exploring bibical ways to raise a child?  How would you like to talk about different ways to teach your child about God and what it means to be a child of God?

I don’t have the answers, but I have a paper to write and children to experient on, do you want to help?  The first think I have to write on is a DVD series which is posted below, let me know if you wouldn’t mind doing these (like a 25 – 30 min commitment on Tuesdays) with me.

Six Video Sessions for small group:
Recently we’ve been working with Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott with some things for the parents of young children. They are best selling authors, who have sold over one million copies of their books. They are a very solid Christian couple that has been featured on Christianity Today, ABC’s Good Morning America, Focus on the Family, The New York Times and they’ve even made their way on to Oprah.

What we’ve been finding is that so many parents out there are wondering, “Do I have what it takes to be a good parent?” A lot of times parents need help, but nobody likes to ask for help.

That’s why we’ve teamed up with Les and Leslie Parrott to create a new video-driven study called Parenting: The Early Years. Now, this goes deeper than any technique of just getting kids to eat their broccoli and clean their room. It takes a Biblical approach into the traits parents want their children to have and what traits they want their children to see modeled in them.

On this six DVD series our team took their cameras into the homes of 20 families and captured real-life parenting moments. Some of these are funny moments and some are just completely honest moments that every parent can relate to.

  •         Session One – Time (19 Minutes)
  •         Session Two - Affirming (16 Minutes)
  •         Session Three – Defiance (24 Minutes)
  •         Session Four – Authenticity(21 Minutes)
  •         Session Five – Worry (15 Minutes)
  •         Session Six – Legacy (17 Minutes)

Chris says:

I think that sounds interesting. As long as the timing works out I would participate. It is always good to learn some new parenting ideas.

I’m glad I don’t have to write the paper. :) I did enough of those for my masters and doctorate.

I am game. I think none of knows all the answers and we all have struggles. The more we can learn and discuss the more we can help one another.

I hope all the babies are feeling better. It sounds like some rough stuff going around. My face book is not working right….Tara, is Finn on a nebulizer? I sure hope that he feels better soon! Peter has a bacterial infection and is not tolerating his medication well. Long days and nights….Looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday!

mommycafe says:

Jenn,
Do you need a break? Let me know if you need any (ANY) thing. I have all the time in the world for you! :-)
It is so hard when they are sick. I hope he gets well soon.

How are you feeling?

Tara and Finn says:

Yes, Finn is on a nebulizer, the RSV got worse and his oxygen levels were borderline so the nebulizer is helping open his airways to help him breathe a bit.

I’m sorry to hear about Peter having a bacterial infection – what medication is get on?

Same goes for us and all of you….if you need ANYthing, please let us know, I don’t want Finley around the other kids yet though but I can get away to help!

Katrina – this does sound interesting and we’ll participate – I feel the same as the other moms, it’s always great to bounce ideas off of each other!

Mindy says:

Hmmm – I would definitely participate, but I know how the rest of you feel about us Catholics and our crazy views! :) Will you even let us join?? :) Anna is finally feeling better after her horrible stomach flu, high fever, and overall yuckiness. It’s been a long week (sounds like many of you can relate)

mommycafe says:

Mindy, I love you even if you are Catholic! :-) I don’t have anything against catholics, they just worship differently than us Salvationist (we are quite weird!. Hope you get some rest after the week.

I think Lydia is coming down with something now. hopefully just a cold or teething. She is so SO cranky and lots of lovely boogers.

The house has been bleached several times this week and the toys are scrubed. So there shouldn’t be any of the germs from any of your children (or mind, they haven’t played with anything this week, mean mom). Look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday.

Tara Schneider says:

Oh I hope Lydia’s not coming down with anything….it’s no fun. Let’s hope it’s just teething….or a small cold. Let us know if you need anything!

Finley is starting to feel better, the nebulizer is really helping.

I’m glad to hear Anna is feeling better. Poor Girl.

Jen – is Peter doing any better????

Hello! Thanks so much for all your well wishes. Peter is finally feeling better. He is sleeping through the night again which is WONDERFUL! I sure am glad that Finn is feeling better. That must have been scary. How about Anna and Izzy? Is Lydia doing ok? I hope she is not getting sick. I will send prayers her way too! We sure are looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday. I am envisioning lots of happy HEALTHY babies! Have a great weekend everyone.

Tara Pasholk says:

Hi everyone!! I’m so sorry that everyone has been sick. Kadyn came down with a viral infection and crupe(spelling?). He was on a steroid that seemed to help. He was pretty sick for a while (103.1 fever) which was scary. It was his first real sickness so I was a little nervous about it. He is getting better though, I am glad to hear everyone else is feeling better too (except Lydia-hopefully she is not getting anything bad.) The parenting sessions sound great-would you be starting them this Tuesday? I am not sure if we would be coming this Tuesday yet or not (it depends if Kadyn is 100% or not.) Let me know if anyone needs anything also. I would be glad to help.

Kirsten and Ollie says:

Hey everyone!

I am glad babies are starting to normalize…

I am in for the study. Katrina – I would be happy to proof your paper if you need someone to, I get lots of practice with Kurt’s.

Also… I have Parent Conferences on Tuesday from 4-6… Can Ollie come party without me?

mommycafe says:

I think he can come! Lydia just has the regular cold and teeth.
